You’re thinking of your own situation. Many of us who live in the city don’t shop at Costco. I’m lucky enough to have a corner grocer where I can do my shopping.

Some people do need a car, if they live in the suburbs, but for people who live in the city, public transit should be attractive, comfortable, and convenient enough so there’s less incentive to own a car. It isn’t that way now, but there’s no reason it can’t be. Look at European cities like Paris or Amsterdam where more people ride bicycles than cars.
