Concert review: Brigitte Calls Me Baby at Cafe Du Nord
This is my second time writing about Brigitte Calls Me Baby, which is one of my current favorite bands. Earlier this week they made their first appearance in San Francisco at Cafe Du Nord.
If you’re not familiar with Cafe Du Nord, it’s a small intimate club with a capacity of only 300 on Market Street near the Church Street station. It’s a great place to catch new upcoming bands.
Brigitte Calls Me Baby is a Chicago-based band fronted by the charismatic lead singer Wes Leavins, who sounds remarkably like a blend of Morrissey, Elvis, and Roy Orbison. The band has a lush sound reminiscent of the Smiths. They’ve only released an EP, but they plan to release a full album later this year and they’ll be playing at Lollapalooza this summer. You can still see them playing small clubs, but I expect that to change soon.
Another Chicago band, Capital Soiree opened for them with a high energy set.
Brigitte Calls Me Baby started their set promptly at 9 PM and played for a little over an hour, with all of the songs from their EP plus some new material. The show opened with “You are only made of dreams”, and for the encore they closed with their first single “The Future is Our Way Out”. Their big surprise was a cover of “Careless Whisper” with their own unique twist. Wes commanded the stage…
